Break Settings

Break Settings

Break types can be applied in two ways: global level and vehicle specific.

  • global level means that the break type is applied to all the vehicles. Problem wide break types are configured in the tab 'Setting' under 'Advanced setting'.

  • vehicle specific means that the break type is only applied to one vehicle, it must therefore be supplied in the vehicle file.

The global break settings apply for vehicles for which no break settings are specified.

Breaks are included in the total cost of a driver. This means that even if a driver is in break, their rate gets counted. Lunch does not get counted towards the total cost.

Around time

The break types 'Around time', 'Lunch' and 'Lunch and legal' can only be used problem wide. When one of these break types are used, then do not use vehicle specific break types.

Break options

The following break options are available:

  • None

  • Custom rules

    • Maximum work time between breaks

    • Maximum drive time between breaks

    • Minimum work time to first break

    • Minimum drive time to first break

    • Around time

  • Predefined break types

    • Lunch

    • Legal

    • Lunch and Legal

    • Night

The break types 'Lunch', 'Legal', 'Lunch and Legal' and 'Night' are a preset of the rules Maximum drive time between breaks and/or Around time.

When trying to edit the present break type via the option Edit break rule, then the break setting will automatically switch to 'Custom rules'.

None

No breaks are applied when selecting this option.

Custom rules

Custom rules can be defined using a (limited) combination of the following five break rules:

  • Maximum work time between breaks
    Define 2 values

    • The maximum worktime a driver can spend before taking a break (hh:mm)

    • The duration of the break (hh:mm)

Wait time is not considered work time.

  • Maximum drive time between breaks
    Define 2 values

    • The maximum drive time before the driver must take a break (hh:mm)

    • The duration of the break (hh:mm)

  • Minimum work time to first break
When the break rule Maximum work time between breaks is used, an additional minimum work time before a break can be taken can be defined.

  • Minimum drive time to first break
When the break rule Maximum drive time between breaks is used, an additional minimum drive time before a break can be taken can be defined.

  • Around time
The rule 'around time' is a suggestion towards OptiFlow to take a break around a certain moment.
    Two parameters must be supplied:

    • Desired break moment (hh:mm)

    • Break duration (hh:mm)

Around time limitations

  • 'Around time' cannot be used when plannings use actual dates. Meaning, this cannot be used in combination with the OrderBook API.

  • The break types 'Lunch' and 'Lunch and Legal' can only be used for vehicles that work on a daily base within the same day. The driver must stop and end on the same day.

  • 'Around time' is currently behind a permission, so it is not available for everyone as it is prone to change.
Should you have a need for this feature, contact your local contact or our service desk.

Allowed combinations

As mentioned before, only a limited set of combinations is allowed.

The following table gives an overview of the allowed combinations:

Break rule

Allowed combinations with the break rule

Break rule

Allowed combinations with the break rule

Maximum work time between breaks

2 maximum work time between breaks or 2 maximum drive time between breaks

and

1 minimum work time to first break or 1 minimum drive time to first break

Maximum drive time between breaks

2 maximum work time between breaks or 2 maximum drive time between breaks

and

1 minimum work time to first break or 1 minimum drive time to first break

Minimum work time to first break

maximum work time between breaks and/or maximum drive time between breaks rules (at least 1)

Minimum drive time to first break

maximum work time between breaks and/or maximum drive time between breaks rules (at least 1)

Around time

No combinations allowed apart from the specific predefined combination for Lunch and Legal.

Predefined break types

The following break types are predefined combinations of the above mentioned custom rules:

  • Lunch

  • Legal

  • Lunch and legal

  • Night

The configuration of these rules can be viewed when selecting the break type, as is shown in the example below for 'Lunch and legal'.

Lunch limitations

  • The break types 'Lunch' and 'Lunch and Legal' can only be used for vehicles that work on a daily base within the same day. The driver must stop and end on the same day.

  • As these break types make use of the rule 'Around time', they are only available for the users who have permission to use the rule. Should you want to have access to this rule and you don't have access already then contact the service desk.

  • In rare conditions, Lunch and Legal can result in illegal routes. When Earliest Start Time is set too early, the possibility exists that the vehicle drives more than 4u30 before the lunch break. In that case the 15min drive time break should be replaced with a 45min break.

Export/upload

Break settings can be uploaded via the column 'break rules'.

The break type preset field does not get exported or uploaded. Multiple rules are separated by a “&”. The definition of a rule always starts with the rule type followed by the necessary values for the rule separated by “-”. The number of values and the format of these values is dependent on the rule type, and is described in the table below.
